According to Public Health England, 7.3 million people in England were prescribed antidepressants in 2018, that’s almost a fifth of all adults. Despite the high number of prescriptions, the majority of people I treat with clinical hypnotherapy for depression, generally have little or no idea how this medication works.

This article is for information purposes only. To explain in an easy to understand way, how SSRI antidepressants work. Hypnotherapy is complimentary to prescribed medication. It’s important to talk to your GP about your medication before making or attempting to make any changes to your medication or dosage.

What are SSRI’s, and what do they do?

Selective, serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI’s as they are also known are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in the UK.

Types of SSRIs include citalopram (Cipramil), dapoxetine (Priligy), escitalopram (Cipralex), fluoxetine (Prozac or Oxactin), fluvoxamine (Faverin), paroxetine (Seroxat), sertraline (Lustral) and vortioxetine (Brintellix).

This group of medicines affect brain chemistry by slowing down the re-absorption the vital neurotransmitter, serotonin (neurotransmitters are what the brain uses to communicate between neurons). Serotonin is considered essential for the regulation of mood and anxiety. SSRI medications do what they say on the packet – they inhibit the reuptake of serotonin making more serotonin available and are ‘selective’ so they don’t impede the reuptake of other neurotransmitters.

How does hypnotherapy work with antidepressants?

Antidepressants make more serotonin available by preventing the re-absorption. SSRI’s, however, don’t make serotonin; this is what clinical hypnosis can help with.

In clinical hypnotherapy, we recognise serotonin as the most important neurotransmitter for maintaining the best physical and mental health. Often referred to as the brains ‘happy drug’, serotonin is our natural remedy to things like stress, anxiety and depression. Solution focused hypnotherapy helps by increasing serotonin production. Hypnotherapy is a healthy and completely natural treatment that helps by giving SSRI’s more of this incredible neurotransmitter to work with.

As a hypnotherapist, I know the benefits of having an uninterrupted supply of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is vital for our physical and mental wellbeing. Creating and maintaining a steady flow of serotonin is at the heart of hypnotherapy. By increasing the quantity of serotonin in the brain, hypnotherapy supports the important retention work of SSRI medication.
